Proposition 6 on the November, 2008 ballot, will increase penalties for certain gang related crimes and would also dedicate $600 million annually from the State General Fund for the support of local law enforcement. Many communities in Sacramento have been impacted heavily by gang violence and while I have concerns about the dedication of State General Fund money for any purpose, I believe that this measure is needed to combat these gangs. One of the primary functions of government is the protection of the public.
